What Types of Injuries Can Be Aided by Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine as a field covers the full array of potential injuries, with a focus on restoration of mobility. Both acute and chronic conditions can benefit from treatment.
Acute sports injuries often occur suddenly while playing, training, or exercising. Symptoms of acute sports injuries may be sudden pain and swelling, as well as redness and tenderness. Sometimes the affected area may be unable to bear weight, and there may be a visible broken bone. It is important to visit a doctor immediately after an injury to ensure the best possible recovery and prevent further injury. You should also avoid returning to play too soon.
Whether you need surgery to repair a ligament or cartilage, it will depend on the severity of your injury. A light sprain can heal fairly quickly, while a ruptured or torn ligament might require surgery. Your doctor will discuss all of your treatment options with you, and you can ask questions about the procedure. The goal of sports medicine for injury rehabilitation is to restore the athlete’s strength and mobility to a high level. Surgical procedures may be necessary to repair damaged tissue, but there are also non-surgical options.
Within our practice, our trained surgeons, doctors, physicians, and therapists can cover a full array of injuries, such as:
- Repetitive stress fractures and sprains
- Acute ankle sprains and fractures
- Hand and wrist injuries
- Neck and spine pain
- Shoulder injuries
