Paul Kelley, PA-C

Paul Kelley, PA-C comes to Carolina Regional Orthopedics with a 20-year background in medicine and a primary concentration in emergency medicine. Paul started his career in the United States Army, working in special operations, and it is here that he first felt the call into medicine. He began his career in the medical field as a nurse. He worked in emergency medicine for most of his career and it was here he developed a special interest in orthopedics.

While working as a registered nurse, he began working to further his education as a physician assistant by attending Methodist University and then Mount Olive University obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Organizational development which in turn led him to his graduate school at the University of North Dakota where he completed his master’s degree in physician assistant studies and was subsequently licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina where he has been practicing to this date.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • Vidant Medical Center, Physician Assistant (Aug 2013 - Present)

         Currently, perform duties of a mid-level medical provider under the supervision of various doctors in the minor emergency department. Normally, working only 1-2 shifts monthly (6-12 hours per) in this capacity, I am required to manage all age ranges and all manner of medical complaints.

  • Fastmed Urgent Care (formerly Carolina Quick Care, acquired in Nov 2014)

         Currently, I work full-time as the primary clinical provider for the Kinston location of the previously mentioned urgent care. I provide services for a varied population ranging from newborn to geriatric. I provide acute management of non-emergent conditions, and triage thto the appropriate care. On a daily basis, the average patient flow ranges from 25-50. In addition to the medical management of the clinic, I also provide on-site managerial assistance for the clinic with oversight from my supervising physician. I work autonomously with phone access to my supervising MD as needed and have done so for the duration of my tenure with this company.

  • Clinical Rotations PA School, Physician Assistant Student (May 2010 - May 2012)

         My experience ranged in location from Grandforks ND, to various satellite locations throughout Eastern North Carolina during the completion of my MS curriculum in the application of Physician Assistant skills. These rotations focused on general medicine and general practice. During the course of my matriculation, I participated in 3-5 week rotations under the supervision of physicians in the ER, Surgery, OB/Gyn, Thoracic Surgery, Wound Care, and a Hospitalist rotation. Skills learned include but are not limited to the management of both acute and chronic patients across the age range from newborn to geriatric. Total hours in clinical rotations was 1389, with total number of patients treated being 1610 (age range<12 months - 17 years = 304, 18-64 = 737, and 65->80 = 569).​

  • Lenoir Memorial Hospital, Registered Nurse (Jun 2001 - Sep 2012)

         In this capacity, I performed all manner of nursing duties in regard to patients ranging in acuity from express/minor to emergent and in every phase of life from birth through adulthood, and into their senior years. At this facility, I moved into the roles of charge nurse and nurse preceptor in addition to working as a staff nurse. These positions require direct interaction with the public, integration into the emergency department staff and team, considerable self-initiative, and above all competence within the field of nursing.

  • Innovative Placements, Preferred Health Care, and Cross Country Travel, Registered Nurse (traveling nursing) (June 2002 - Dec 2004)

         Worked extensively in Easter North Carolina as an RN in various emergency departments. These ranged in size from Level 1 trauma centers like Wake Medical Center (5 months) to mid-level rural departments with approximately 25-30 beds such as Durham Regional and Craven Regional Medical Centers (5-6 months respectively) and down to small facilities such as Beaufort County's 11 bed ER that served as my last travel assignment. My duties at these facilities entailed all duties commiserate of an emergency department and critical care nurse.

  • Northcare, Registered Nurse (Dec 1999 - May 2001)

         Worked as a private duty nurse for homebound patients. In this capacity, I was in charge of all manner of direct patient care, both routine and emergent. Responsibilities included weekly and monthly managerial task, scheduling, ordering of supplies, and management of the daily affairs as needed related to the patient's level of illness.

  • Pitt County Memorial Hospital (now Vidant) (Jun 1999 - Dec 1999)

         This was my initial job after graduating from nursing school. In this position, I worked as a staff nurse and handled all manner of patients from pediatric to geriatric in accordance with their level of acuity from non-urgent to emergent.

  • Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Emergency Department Technician (May 1998 - Jun 1999)

         Handled direct patient care assisting nursing staff with the implementation of the nursing process as it applied to the ER environment.

  • Interim Health Care, Nursing Assistant I-II (Sep 1997 - May 1998)

         Performed all of the basic nursing assistant tasks, as well as the additional responsibilities of community inclusion (integrating the mentally handicapped into society) formulating bi-monthly planning calendars for my client's inclusion work, and collaborating with local and state organizations to initiate new experiences for my clients.

  • United States Army, Soldier (Jun 1989 - Aug 2001)

         I served 5 years in the Utah Army National Guard working as an Engineer Operations Sergeant for the 1/19th Special Forces Group (Airborne). In this capacity, I was in charge of all manner of supplies related to the operation of a small tactical team as well as all of the engineering operations. i.e. (construction, demolitions, mobility, and counter mobility). In 1993, I enlisted in the Active Duty Army and spent 3 years serving in various positions ranging from a team member, squad leader, and platoon sergeant. While serving actively, I served with honor in various combat tours, including operations in Africa, Egypt, and Asia. My duties included but were not limited to the responsibility for the health and welfare, leadership and training of up to thirty-two personnel. I was also accountable for approximately, $500,000 worth of equipment and vehicles. After my active duty tour was complete, I enlisted in the NC National Guard, where I began to serve as an engineer, and then transferred into the medical corps as a line medic, and then a nurse. I was honorably discharged from the US Army in 2001.​
